Why feed a Joint Supplement?
The Hyaline cartilage which covers the end of the long bones is a very specialised structure that provides some shock absorption & a friction-free surface so that those bones can rub across one another without doing damage. This relationship is added to by the joint fluid itself, which is an oily dense liquid which acts as a lubricant & further helps to absorb the shock. The joint fluid also provides nutrition to the cartilage as it has no direct blood supply. All its nourishment must come through the joint fluid.
Joint cartilage can easily become damaged in what we call “wear & tear”. The repetitive loading of particular joints in a particular way eventually starts to grind away at the cartilage. This is exacerbated by conformational flaws, and by working horses once they are fatigued. The problem begins as inflammation & then erosion of the hyaline cartilage. Once you have this on one surface it is a rough spot that irritates the opposing surface & produces a “kissing lesion” there. Gradually that will involve a large surface & a deeper problem. It is what makes Osteo-arthritis such a degenerative progressive disease. The trick is to stop it in its very early stages.
By feeding high quality Glucosamine & Chondroitin Sulfate you can directly increase the concentration of these substrates in the joint fluid & that will increase the availability of these crucial building blocks to the cartilage. That makes it much easier for the cartilage to undergo its normal repair mechanisms. Every time you exercise your horse, the body must actually repair & regenerate muscles, tendons, bones & joints. In fitness terms that is what happens as fitness occurs. In response to loads that produce mild “damage” the body responds by strengthening the loaded areas.
We are happy that we have sourced high quality Glucosamine and we are recommending feeding it at clinically useful doses. There are some supplements that feed much less than the daily 5 grams we get results with, which keeps their cost down, but the results also will be down. Our Chondroitin Sulfate is in the form of cold-processed shark cartilage. If this product is not cold processed, i.e.cooked, the chondroitin will denature & be useless. The other commonly used source of Chondroitin is Bovine cartilage. The safest processing of this product would be to cook it first- in which case you seriously devalue the Chondroitin. We are happier feeding fish to herbivores than beef.
